"Does your Mom know about the deal?" Nina asked Felipe as they finally made it back to Palácio de Concord, the seat of power of the monarchy of Concordia. They figured that since they had the dowager princess’ blessing, skipping one pre-arranged photo op would be fine.

As instructed by his mother, Felipe had a blanket under one arm while he and Nina held hands. The action now came so naturally between them that neither of them seemed to notice that there was nobody else around, save for a few staff members making their way from one part of the palace to another. But beyond that, holding hands made her smile. It gave her hope that her secret desires, while new, had a chance of being fulfilled.

“She doesn’t.” Felipe confirmed, his brows furrowed in concentration as he walked the familiar path to the sunflower patch, walking straight through the middle courtyard to get to the grounds out back. “When she abdicated her throne, she meant it entirely. She doesn’t even try to look at the state papers they send to my desk. And I’d hate to think what she would have made us do if she did find out about this.”

"I think it's nice." She declared. “I would have given anything to have my mother teasing my boyfriend, getting me out of very public appearances.”

"It's nice to get away from the cameras." He concluded, missing the point as he stopped abruptly, very purposefully stepping in front of Nina to block her view of what was ahead.

“Felipe.” She warned him.

“Saturnina,” he countered, his voice brimming with mirth. “I want this to be a great visual experience for you. This field is my heart out on display for everyone, which isn’t at all manly, but I find that I don’t really care. So . . . don’t laugh.”

“I wasn’t planning on laughing. I already think you’re amazing, without seeing it. Now can you just let me have a look?”

“Not until I know you’re ready.”

“. . . Am I ready now?” She asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Felipe.” She groaned. “I’ll love it even if they were just stubby little knobs on the ground.”

Then without further ado and word from Felipe, he moved aside and Nina set eyes on the sunflowers. She could never explain this to him later on when they talked about it, but when she first saw the field, all the sounds of the world fell away for her. There was only the vision of the bright yellow flowers, turning their heads towards the darkening sky. Nina wanted to hold all of the flowers in her hands. They were so bright that she wondered if she could use them to fill the black hole in her heart.

Her Little Prince had grown and cared for what looked like a hundred sunflowers, all of them thriving and happy in the love he gave them.

Nina’s breath was lost to the vision in front of her, and the smile spread across her lips faster and bigger than she had managed before.
